JayEguillos scored 14 points and Jumbo Plastic capitalized on their experience in the fourth quarter to escape with a 79-74 come-from-behind win against newcomer Bread Story on Thursday in the PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup at the Ynares Arena in Pasig City.
The Giants, who have heightened expectation this season, rallied from 13 points down in the third quarter and outscored the Pirates, 29-18 in the last 10 minutes.
They were still down by eight early in the fourth quarter when they scored 14 unanswered points to turn the complexion of the game. Dexter Maiquez capped that run with a 3-point play that put the Jumbo Plastic ahead to stay, 59-58.
“We panicked when they (Bread Story) got the lead early. Ang gusto makabalik agad. But overall masama ang execution and we also defended lousily,” admitted Jumbo Plastic coach Stevenson Tiu. “Yung experience na lang namin talaga ang nagdala.”
Eguillos scored 10 of his points in the fourth quarter to keep the team in the fight. Joseph Terso had 11, including eight in the fourth to spark the Giants comeback, and MAiquez added 10 for the Giants, who had a 45-34 edge off the boards.
Angelo Gabayni tallied 18 points, Jackson Corpuz had 17 and Eddie Daquioag added 13 for the Pirates, who became cautious in the fourth and missed a lot of open shots.
