Marinerong Pilipino squandered an early 21-point lead but recovered just in time to end its two-game losing slide with a 92-78 win over Batangas-EAC Tuesday in the 2018 PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup at Ynares Sports Arena.

Rian Ayonayon saved the Skippers in the payoff period where he scored eight of his 16 points. He also had six rebounds, two assists, and two steals to help even his team’s slate at 2-2.

“After back-to-back losses, that’s what a team would want to happen in our next outing,” said a relieved coach Koy Banal. “Good thing the players listened and followed what we instructed because we’re pressured against a team that will keep on fighting.”

Gab Banal just missed out on a double-double with 17 markers and nine boards, while Alvin Pasaol had his best game to date, firing 13 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Marinerong Pilipino had a blistering start where it took a 36-15 lead early in the second quarter and were seemingly on its way to an easy rout.

Jeric Diego brought the Generals back to life, leading the 30-point third quarter which got his side within three, 52-49, midway in the frame but the Skippers once again pushed the gas pedal and built a 10-point cushion en route to the victory.

“It only shows that anybody can compete this conference,” said Banal. “We have to bring the right kind attitude every game, which is to respect every opponent that we have. Clearly that game shows how competitive the field is and how well prepared they will come in facing us.”

Diego ended up with 20 points and four rebounds for the winless Batangas-EAC (0-3), while Earvin Mendoza got 15 markers, seven boards, and five dimes.
